A blank thermostat display is one of the most common reasons for a service call, and the cause ranges from trivial to a real system fault. Battery-powered models simply need fresh batteries. Hardwired models that go blank usually point to a lost 24-volt supply somewhere in the circuit — a blown fuse on the control board, a loose connection at the thermostat, or a safety device that tripped and cut power intentionally.
The Float Switch Connection Most Homeowners Don't Expect
On many systems, the condensate drain pan's float switch is wired directly into the same 24-volt circuit that powers the thermostat, so when that switch trips because the drain pan is full, the thermostat can go completely dead — no display, no response to any button. Wiring and the C-Wire Question
Thermostats communicate with the equipment through a small bundle of low-voltage wires, each assigned to a function like calling for cooling, heating, or fan. A loose or corroded connection at either end of that bundle can cause a thermostat to lose calls intermittently or stop working altogether. Smart thermostats add another wrinkle: many need a dedicated common wire, or C-wire, for continuous power, and systems that were wired years ago for a basic thermostat sometimes don't have one run. Without it, or without a compatible power adapter, a smart thermostat can reboot randomly or drop its Wi-Fi connection.
Miscalibration and Placement Problems
A thermostat reads the air immediately around it, so its location matters more than most homeowners expect. One mounted near a supply vent can sense cold air blowing directly on it and shut the system off before the rest of the house has actually cooled. One in direct afternoon sun through a window, or above a television or lamp, can read artificially warm. These placement issues create symptoms that look like a broken sensor — short cycling, rooms that never feel right — when the thermostat itself is functioning correctly.
Smart Thermostat Setup Mistakes
Beyond wiring compatibility, the most frequent smart thermostat complaints come from setup rather than hardware failure. Incorrect equipment-type settings during installation can cause a heat pump to run auxiliary heat constantly, or a system to run the wrong stage. Geofencing and learning features can also override a schedule in ways that look like the thermostat "ignoring" input, when it's actually following a rule the homeowner set up and forgot about.
Fan-Only vs. Cool, and Schedule or Hold Confusion
Setting the fan to "on" instead of "auto" runs the blower continuously whether or not the system is actively cooling, which can feel like airflow without cold air and gets mistaken for a cooling failure. Similarly, a temporary hold left active from a previous adjustment can keep the house at a temperature that doesn't match the visible schedule, making the thermostat appear stuck. Checking the current mode, fan setting, and any active hold is a fast first step before assuming a hardware fault.

Telling a Thermostat Fault From a System Fault
The simplest test is watching what happens when you call for cooling: if the indoor fan starts and the display correctly shows a cooling call, the thermostat has done its job and the problem is downstream in the equipment. If nothing happens at all — no fan, no sound, no change in display — the fault is more likely in the thermostat, its wiring, or the low-voltage power supply feeding it.
