Filter MERV Tradeoffs vs. Airflow
Filters are rated by MERV value, and a higher number means the filter catches smaller particles — but it also creates more resistance to airflow moving through it. Every system is designed around a certain amount of static pressure it can push against, and swapping in a filter far above what the system was designed for can choke down airflow enough to affect cooling capacity and, in some cases, contribute to coil icing. The right filter for a given system balances filtration level against the airflow that system can actually push through it.
Whole-Home Dehumidification
An AC system removes moisture from indoor air as a side effect of cooling — humid air passes over the cold evaporator coil and water condenses out. That only happens while the system is actively running a cooling cycle, which means on mild, humid days when the thermostat doesn't call for much cooling, indoor humidity can still climb. UV lamps are sometimes installed near the evaporator coil to limit biological growth on the coil surface, where the combination of moisture and dust can otherwise support it. Condensate and Biological Growth in Air Handlers
The evaporator coil and its drain pan are wet for as long as the system runs a cooling cycle, and that damp environment, combined with dust that settles on the coil surface, can support biological growth if it isn't kept clean and draining properly.
