Disconnected or Crushed Flex Duct
Flexible duct in attics is prone to two failure modes: it separates at the connection to a plenum or boot, or it gets crushed by stored items, foot traffic during other attic work, or its own weight sagging over time. A fully disconnected supply run can dump conditioned air straight into the attic instead of the room it's meant to reach, which shows up as a room that barely cools no matter how long the system runs.
Failed Mastic or Tape Joints
Duct joints are typically sealed with mastic or foil tape, and both degrade with age and attic heat cycling. Once a joint opens even partially, conditioned air escapes into the attic before it reaches a register, and outside air can be pulled in on the return side. This kind of leak often develops gradually, so the cooling loss shows up as underperformance rather than a sudden problem.
Attic Heat Gain and Insulation Value
An uninsulated or under-insulated attic in Florida can reach well over 120°F on a summer afternoon. Duct insulation (the R-value wrapped around the duct itself) resists some of that heat transfer, but thin, compressed, or missing insulation lets attic heat soak into the air moving through the duct before it ever reaches the room, undercutting the cooling the system produced.
Return Undersizing
Supply ducts get most of the attention because that's where cool air comes out, but the return side has to move an equivalent volume of air back to the system. A return that's undersized for the equipment restricts total airflow, which can reduce cooling capacity and, on some systems, contribute to coil icing from restricted airflow across it.
Rooms That Never Cool
When one or two rooms consistently lag behind the rest of the house, the cause is usually specific to that room's duct run: a long, poorly insulated run, a kink behind a wall, a damper closed or partially closed inside the duct, or a disconnected boot. It's rarely something wrong with the AC system as a whole, since the rest of the house is cooling fine.
Pressure Imbalance and Door-Whistle Symptoms
When a room's supply airflow outpaces what its return path can handle, air pressurizes inside that room. A closed door with the AC running can whistle or feel hard to open under that pressure. This is a sign of a return-side or door-undercut issue for that zone, not a sign the AC is somehow overpowered.
Humid Attic Air Pulled Into Leaky Returns
Return ducts run under slight negative pressure relative to the surrounding space, which means a leak on the return side pulls attic air in rather than pushing conditioned air out. Sealing vs. Replacing Runs
Minor joint separations and small mastic failures are usually candidates for sealing in place. Duct that's physically crushed, torn, chewed by pests, or simply undersized for the system it's attached to typically needs to be replaced rather than patched, since sealing doesn't restore a duct's shape or correct its diameter.
How Duct Problems Get Found
Diagnosis usually starts with a visual check of accessible duct in the attic or crawlspace, followed by static pressure testing and airflow measurement at individual registers to see which zones are underperforming. Comparing airflow numbers room by room narrows down which runs need attention without having to open up finished ceilings or walls unnecessarily.
